This palm is a native of Arizona and California and can be grown in milder areas of the U.K. where temperatures as low as -8deg.C can be tolerated if not prolonged. A sheltered full-sun position in soil with a chalky under-base will probably suit it best. Develops a very large trunk which narrows from a wide base. The crown is formed from fan-shaped, multi-segmented pale green leaves which are borne on stems which are up to 2 metres long. White inflorescences can appear in late summer followed by clusters of black fruits.
