This is a genus of hardy deciduous trees which share a common characteristic - clusters of white flowers followed by berries. The multi-part, ferny leaved Sorbus aucuparia group, which includes the tree commonly known as mountain ash, do best in fertile, moist, neutral to acidic soils. The Sorbus aria group, which includes the trees commonly referred to as the whitebeams have simpler leaves often with silvery-white undersides and will thrive in chalky soils and can tolerate maritime exposure.
