These lovely deciduous trees or shrubs will enhance any supportive garden. They will grow in any well-drained soil but will not do well on cold sites and are best planted with a sunny, south or west-facing wall as protection. The young, coppery leaves turn a bright, fresh green for summer and then yellow before falling in the autumn. Vivid orangery-red flowers are borne any time between June and September and if you are lucky any fruit produced will ripen in the open.
Punica granatum 'Nana Gracilissima' (Dwarf pomegranate)
Has much smaller leaves and flowers. Even the fruit is smaller and should be regarded as ornamental. It's dense, compact habit makes it an ideal subject for a mixed border or as a more formal looking standard.
