This laurel is probably the hardiest of the evergreen laurel and is also tolerant of chalk in the soil. It is more formal looking and bears darker, slightly smaller leaves than the common laurel and they are carried on reddish stalks. If the plants are left untrimmed, fragrant, upright clusters of white flowers are produced in June. The variant 'Augustiflora' has narrower leaves and is the most widely used, especially in standard tree form.
