The mulberries are hardy deciduous trees which are worthy of consideration for any garden. They prefer sunny, sheltered positions where they will not be exposed to north and east winds. The soil need not be too fertile and poor chalky, or light sandy types suit them best. The foliage often turns golden-yellow in the autumn.
This is the mulberry that featured in gardens of the past. It develops into a stately round-headed tree. The heart-shaped leaves are dark-green and the large black-red fruits are pleasant to taste and are usually ripe by late summer.
