Liriodendron tulipifera (Tulip tree)

This hardy deciduous tree is an interesting subject for the larger garden. It will thrive in deep, fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, preferably in full sun to encourage flowering. The unusually shaped 3-lobed leaves turn yellow in the autumn. On mature trees, strange, tulip-like yellow-green flowers banded with orange appear in early to mid-summer high in the tree.
