Davidia involucrata

The common name for this hardy deciduous plant relates to the large white bracts which accompany the small flowers on mature specimens in early summer. The bracts are said to resemble a flight of doves or white handkerchiefs. The leaves are bright green, heart-shaped and with felty undersides. It is best planted in well-drained loamy soil in a position with some shelter from strong winds.
